Why it is advisable to memorize your first chess openings?

When you sit across the 8x8 board, there are numerous things that comes to your mind. Reading your opponent, planning a strategy, critical thinking, moves and many others. Your opening moves are one of them. They decide the fate of the game forward. Whether you win or lose or even by how many points, all these are decided at the very beginning of the game. It is said that there are certain opening moves that a player memorizes and your opponent’s action is actually a reaction to your opening moves. Your strategy, planning, all are used in the mid and later part of the game.

Why is it important to learn some of the opening moves?

Every player has a certain style of playing this game of black and white. Though some things remain constant and should be kept that way. It is said that as you learn and start your journey to become a chess player, you get to know that chess theories and concepts only can be applied once the game has begun. This means these can be applied at the mid or end game. For starters, you need to memorize some opening moves. This would give a direction to the game and you can think straight ahead. Some moves like King’s Gambit, Ruy Lopez, Queen’s Gambit and the English must be memorized if you choose white and Sicilian Defense, Scandinavian, French Defense, and the Slav, if you choose black.

How do you learn these moves?

If you think reading chess books and watching youtube videos would help, it would definitely give you an idea but won’t help you memorize any moves. So get a board and sit across it. This would give a better understanding of the moves. You also learn from your opponent and get a practical knowledge rather than mugging it. Also, a way to memorize better is to keep a notebook handy. As soon as you believe you have fit it in your memory, try to write it down on a notebook.

The beginning of every grandmaster

They agree to it or not, initially, every grandmaster started with learning and memorizing opening moves. Once you get acquainted with the opening moves, get to the next exercise. Learning these moves doesn’t mean you do not have the potential to learn this game. Learning these moves gives a better chance to proceed and eventually win a game. It also helps you understand the structure of the game and understand your position. Your idols, the grand masters have now been practising these opening moves since years so they don’t need to visually see to move ahead. They just virtually picture it in their brain and focus on ideas of the opening move. If you wish to trick your opponent just like your grandmasters do, try and learn all the basic and important opening moves.
